William Sonoma - French Onion Dip

I ran across this recipe at http://champaign-taste.blogspot.com/. It is a really great blog that has restaurant reviews and recipes.  You should check it out!

Try to make this dip the day before you serve as it really lets the flavors develop!  I guarantee this is much better than what you can buy in the grocery store.

2 TB. butter
1 large onion, finely diced
1 tsp. salt
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tsp. Worchestershire sauce
1 1/4 cups sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

In a frying pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter.  Add the onion and salt.  Cook, stirring often, until soft and carmelized - about 20 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Remove the pan from heat.  Add the worchestershire sauce and stir to scrape up any browned bits stuck to the pan.  Transfer the onion to a small bowl and let cool to room temperature.

In a bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, cayenne and black pepper.  Stir in the cooled onion.

Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or up to 1 week.

Serve with potato chips and veggies for dipping.

Makes about 2 cups
