Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

So much for my 2011 resolution to post at least 3 new recipes a week!  It is March already and this is my second recipe for the year....and it is not even fit for human consumption!

This one is for the dogs...literally.

Sir Lancelot Chubbymac - aka "Lance"

Our oldest "kid" is Sir Lancelot Chubbymac, he is a 9 year old Black Lab with some crazy allergies.  We  have spent the past few years trying different (and progressively more expensive) dog foods/treats to help ease his digestion/gas/skin issues.  While he is doing "okay" on his current food and treats, the price is just getting out of hand.  So I am now on a quest to find some homemade recipes that is easier on the pocketbook and can stop him from clearing out a room with his gas issues!

Here is my first attempt!

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

You can use all natural organic unsweetened peanut butter from the health food store, or Justins Organic Peanut Butter, made especially for dogs.
For this recipe, I just used regular creamy pb from my cupboard.

Molasses is a healthy sweetener that has a variety of trace minerals, including manganese, which is good for your dog.

Don't forget that this a treat recipe, and should not be used as a meal!

Do I smell peanut butter???

Ingredients

1/2 cup peanut butter
4 TBSP. blackstrap molasses
1 cup water
6 TBSP vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 cups whole wheat flour

Directions:

Mix the molasses, peanut butter, water and oil until blended.

Combine the oats and flour in a separate bowl, then slowly add to the wet ingredients. Mix thoroughly (I use my blender and pulse until it forms a ball around the side of the bowl.), but this can easily be done with a hand mixer, or even by hand.

Drop approximately 36 teaspoon sized portions onto a baking sheet. I flatten them with the bottom of a glass, and bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes (until firm)

These are sturdy and will keep in an airtight container for about 2 weeks.
