Mardi Gras King Cakes

Fat Tuesday is here and today is all about cooking some good food!

This morning I was excited to get up early and start the morning with these mini Mardi Gras King Cakes.  I usually love the process of make things from scratch, but this time I went more "Semi-Homemade, Sandra Lee" style.  This is a simple 2 ingredient recipe using a canned cinnamon roll and some Mardi Gras themed sugar sprinkles!

Ingredients:

1 can of refrigerated cinnamon roll dough, with glaze
green , purple and yellow sugar sprinkles

Directions:
Pop open the canister containing the cinnamon roll dough.  This part always scares me a little bit.  I know the pop is coming, but it still gives me heart a little jump!  haha

Separate the dough portions, and unravel each cinnamon bun.

Take the length of the unraveled cinnamon dough and bring together both ends, folding the dough in half lengthwise.

Twist the dough loop and pull into a braided rope.
Bring the ends of the twist together, to form a round, braided O-shaped bread, which should be about the size of your palm.  I would suggest using a toothpick to secure the ends together to make for a nicer presentation!

Spray your baking sheet with cooking spray and follow the instructions on the package to bake.

Traditionally, a King Cake has a small plastic baby hidden in it. The person that finds the baby, makes the next King Cake!

Note: If you do this, be sure to insert the plastic baby AFTER the cake has been baked.

Use the icing that came in the cinnamon roll package to frost each cake.

Decorate with the green, yellow and purple colored sugars.

These cakes would be great served as breakfast with a steaming cup of coffee, or as a dessert!
